通过观察舌头的位置，元音可分为前元音、中元音和后元音三类。前元音在发音的时候，舌头的前部总是处在口腔中最高的位置。如果舌头的中部处于最高的位置，那么这样发出的元音叫做中元音。但如果抬高舌头的后部使其高于其他部分，那么这样就形成了后元音。
