Itisunclearexactlywhengaypeoplestartedusingtheclosetmetaphor,but"itmayhavebeenusedinitiallybecausemanymenwhoremained'covert'thoughtoftheirhomosexualityasasortof'skeletoninthecloset'."Itmayalsohavecomefromoutsiderswhovieweditthatway.Itseemsthat"comingoutofthecloset"wasbornasamixtureoftwometaphors:adebutanteproudlysteppingintothearmsofacommunityandashockingsecretbeingkeptinhiding.Now.thecommunityisthewidercommunity,andthesecretisnolongershocking,"Comingout"isausefulphrase,butitneednotimplyacloset.
